Ethical Beauty Brands for Every Budget
1. Glossier // Skin care + makeup
The creators of Glossier are all about dewy, glowing skin. Who doesn’t want that?! Born from beauty blog Into the Gloss, this line of gentle cosmetics was created based on the needs of its readers. Glossier products are hypoallergenic, paraben-free, vegan (with the exception of the very few products that contain honey), and are never tested on animals. Favorite products include Cloud Paint cream blush and Haloscope highlighting stick. My daily makeup routine leans into a more natural look and this highlighter is subtle enough to fit right in. It’s not glittery; it creates a lovely dewy effect that I haven’t seen in any other highlighter (and I shopped around for a very long time!). Products are priced from $9 for facial cleanser to $65 for a serum trio, making Glossier an affordable choice among ethical beauty lines. BONUS! 2. Juice Beauty // Skin care, anti-aging + makeup
In 2005, founder Karen Behnke founded Juice Beauty with the mission to create organic products that perform as well as, if not better, than conventional cosmetics. With a team of PhD chemists, physicians, and microbiologists but her side, she did just that. Juice Beauty products are natural, certified organic, vegan, cruelty-free, and wrapped in recycled packaging. They never contain parabens, petroleum, pesticides, propylene glycols, silicones, talc, phthalates, sulfates, artificial dyes, or synthetic fragrance. The creators of Juice Beauty seem to have thought of everything from ethical packaging to sustainable farming and production practices. Skin care products have a gently, earthy scent and a small amount goes a long way. My favorite product is the SPF 30 Tinted Mineral Moisturizer - perfect for protecting sensitive skin from the sun while offering light, sheer coverage. Products are priced between $20 and $110. 3. Pacifica // Skincare, makeup, nail polish, suncare + hair products
Pacifica is another innovative cosmetic company that is overcoming the misconception that natural products do not deliver results. Known for their efforts in sustainability, Pacifica products are gluten-free, vegan, cruelty-free, natural, and never contain phthalates, parabens, sulfates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, petroleum, peanut oil, and triclosan. I love that Pacifica products are just as effective as they are affordable. Quality ethical cosmetics don’t have to cost and arm and a leg and Pacifica is out to make sure every girl can use products that are good for her budget and her body. Favorite products include Pacific 7 Free Nail Polishes (free of some seriously toxic ingredients found in most other nail polishes!) and coconut-infused Pink Nudes Mineral Eye Shadow Palette. Products are priced from $4 (for lip balms and individual facial packets) to $22 for certain skin care products. BONUS! For 10% OFF your first purchase, click here for my personal referral link!
4. Raw Sugar // Body wash, bath products, lotions, shampoo + conditioner
Made in Southern California, Raw Sugar products are made with cold pressed fruits, organic extracts, and essential oils. When I discovered Raw Sugar I was immediately drawn in by the incredibly fresh scents of their products, so when I scanned the label and saw that their products are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes, and toxic chemical I was over-the-moon! Eco-friendly packaging, ethical non-animal testing, certified organic products, and a mission to give back (they donate a bar of soap to those in need with every product purchased!) sealed my stamp of approval. My current obsessions are The Bounce Back Shampoo + Conditioner; my hair has never been softer and the fruity small still has me smitten! The best part: products are priced between $5 and $12.99.
5. Burt’s Bees // Makeup, skin care, lip care, mama + baby products
You probably know Burt’s Bees for the minty chapstick that made its way into our hearts as soon as we were old enough to shop for it. But did you know that Burt’s Bees is about more than just chapstick? They carry a full line of makeup, skin care, and products for moms and babies. These products are cruelty-free and formulated without phthalates, parabens, petrolatum, and SLS. While not considered vegan (many products are made with honey or beeswax), The Burt’s Bees website promises its products contain “no fillers, no fluff, and no false promises. If an ingredient doesn’t have a function it doesn’t make it into our formula!” Many Burt’s Bees products are 100% natural and any that aren’t are 99% natural and clearly marked. All products are priced from $2.99 to about $55. If you’re a fan of the classic Beeswax Lip Balm, try the all natural Honey formula! My big sister and new mama swears by the Baby Multipurpose Ointment for dry skin and diaper irritation. BONUS! 6. Eco Tools // Makeup brushes
Eco Tools makeup brushes are my favorite. They’re super soft, come in a wide variety of sizes, and blend in makeup with a gorgeous, natural-looking finish. They’re been around for over a decade and continue producing products that are PETA certified cruelty-free and vegan. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet, which is why Eco Tools makes brush handles from renewable bamboo and packages their products in boxes made from 20% cotton and 80% bamboo fibers. Brushes cost between $5 for single brushes or $22 for sets.
